The Genres of Games as a Whole

The Genres of Games as a Whole

How many types of games are there?

There are a lot of different kinds of games, to be honest. Some games genres are more popular than others, and others are more beneficial, whereas some can be funner. But, the word “funner” is dependent on you. Lets look at the first kind of games ever made: arcade.

What kind of game is “arcade”?

Well, arcade is the kind of game that you play for fun. I mean, every game has a level of competitiveness, but that isn’t the point here. When arcade games came out in the early 80’s, people were focused on having fun. I’m sure you’ve heard of “game arcades”.

Honestly, that’s what they were called until the genre of games became the style of the game people were playing.

Arcade games are games meant to be played to pass time or have fun in a third-person, two-dimensional perspective. They are the kind of games you can pick up and put down anytime at all. The main focus of these games is to play to score points or just beat it altogether.

The hit arcade game Mario, is the most widely known and most popular in the world. If you’ve never play Mario, I suggest you stop reading this and play it now (you don’t have to, but it helps to get a feel to what arcade games are).

To summarize this, arcade games are light, fun games meant to entertain the player at its heart. If you like games where you play just for fun or to prove yourself that you’ve been around the block a few times, these games could be for you.

What kind of game is “first person shooter”?

First person shooters, informally known as FPS games, are games that stimulate the senses of hearing and sight at its core, taking you, the player, into a first-person perspective. They are highly competitive, violent-style games that challenge reaction times and the ability to make decisions on a moments notice.

They are very fun to those who like them, again, the word “fun” means different things to everyone.

They can be great to strengthen relationships with friends because they are so fast. You blink and you miss it sometimes. But, these games are also highly competitive, which helps when you play with friends (you can really prove your metal in these games).

The nice thing about this kind of game is that it pays off in a lot of ways, including mental thinking speed and physical reaction times. And, if you get really good at this kind of game, like Halo, Call of Duty, or Battlefield, you can even enter competition tournaments, where real money is put down to win. These game events can go into the millions where money is concerned.

To sum it up, these games require quick thinking and fast reflexes. Quick is the word and sharp is the action. If you like games where you stop at nothing to get what you want, these games might be for you.

What kind of game is “arena?”

Well, arena, to put it simple, is like when two boxers get into a ring to fight. That’s about as close as I could get it for you. They are the brothers of FPS games, they are also very competitive. Most of these games are 2-dimensional perspective, but third-person where that is concerned.

The most widely known of these games is Super Smash Bros. and Street Fighter, along with Mortal Kombat. These games feature a variety of ways to defeat your opponent. You can defeat them with guns, martial arts, and other things.

Games like this are strictly competitive. You are out to beat the other guy as much as he is to beat you. Since these games are so cutthroat, these also have high stakes in competitive tournaments, but not as much sometimes.

When addressing what kind of skills it tests, they would be mental predictions/anticipations, and, they do set a record for this, reaction times. For example, the Super Smash Bros. series literally is all about frames. the most optimal frames-per-second is 60, so, your reaction times have to be as quick as 1/60th of a second (sometimes).

Wow. That is fast. So, to sum it up in one paragraph, if you like competitive games where you are as good as you are fast, stopping at nothing to show you are the best at brawl-style fighting, then arena games are right down your alley.

What kind of game is “creative”?

Creative is a game genre which tests and strengthens your engineering skills and imagination. They literally are as big and/or fun as your imagination. You can do anything with these kinds of games.

A perfect example is Minecraft, and Terraria. These games challenge you to think about what you are creating and how you will accomplish that. These games are in no way competitive unless someone or a group of people set out to create that to play around with.

Through games like this people have come to develop the skills to survive in any situation in games that require you to do so, such as the two examples above. Some people, who’ve played these games, already would know the general idea of what to do if they needed to survive in the woods if they were lost.

These games are light at heart and are almost always G-rated, so any age can play them, and they are great if you want to play with friends (the more the better!). If you don’t have any good skill at reaction times or other, that’s okay! You don’t necessarily need that to do well in these games.

To summarize this, if games that require you to think and plan your way to success, survive as well as the next guy, or even play with some friends, then these games are sure to be to your liking.

What kind of game is “RTS”?

Real-time-strategy games, informally named RTS, is a game where you manage an empire. Games like Supreme Commander, or Age of Empire, or Civilization. These games challenge you to make the best of your world.

What I mean by that is you start off as a simple little village and grow into an empire through economic and wartime measures. These games are very competitive at a slower rate that the previous games, and also do require a degree of creativeness.

Because these games are about being competitive and beating your opponent, these games are great to play with friends and are also considered in actual competition tournaments.

Although, because these games are so large and slow, they do challenge one’s ability to manage things at once, essentially, multi-task your way to victory, if I may be so blunt.

Again, to add it all up, if managing an empire and overthrowing another one’s empire through economic and wartime measures sounds like a good idea for you, then consider playing RTS games, you’ll enjoy them.

What kind of game is “simulation”?

Simulation games are exactly what they sound like: simulations. They take real life parameters and program them into games that you can act out, as if you were actually there.

A multitude of games have been made off of this, a perfect example is Wargaming.net and their three game trilogy, World of Tanks, World of Warplanes, and World of Warships. These games take real life situations and put you at the controls.

These games come with a blend of RTS-style strategy, arena-style strategy anticipation, and FPS-style thinking. Since many of these games are relatively large, these games are slow and take a little bit longer to finish than its brothers in game genres.

To sum it all up, if taking controls of a machine and crushing your opponent with firepower and outsmarting them right on the battlefield sounds like your cup of tea, then simulation games are definitely the way to go for you.

What kind of game is “flash”?

Flash games are a more recent kind of game, they’ve only now become quite popular. They are small, less detailed games made by novice and some experienced game developers with the sole intention of small goals in mind.

Since they are so small, there isn’t really much to say. They are all over the map when it comes to what kind of games. They can be adventure, puzzle, creative, anything at all.

To summarize it (even though its not a lot), flash games are games you can play without seriously committing to play them. If sitting down and playing a small game to pass time for a little while sounds like a good idea, then flash games are for you.

There are so many! How will I know which ones to play?!

It’s really very simple, mein freude. Just try them out, and you’ll understand what I mean. I can’t really tell you which ones you’ll like and which ones you won’t, so the best way to get that answered without wasting too much time is to just play the games.

You never know what you might come across.
